Dolores Hartley, age 82 of New Albin, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Dolores Hartley was born in New Albin on August 10, 1920, to Edward J. Meyer and Lucy L. Higgins. She graduated from the New Albin High School with the class of 1937. In 1943, she graduated from Saint Francis School of Nursing. She married Peter Hartley at Long Beach California on January 12, 1944, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. From 1943 to 1946, she was a surgical nurse in a number of West Coast Hospitals in San Diego, San Mateo, South Washington, and Seattle. She also supervised a nursing home in San Francisco. At one time, she worked at the Wood Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee. In 1946, she returned to New Albin to wait for the birth of her first son, Patrick. Prior to retirement, she was a pediatric nurse at Skemp Clinic in La Crosse for six years. She retired from that due to ill health.
Dolores was a member of the VFW Auxiliary for 56 years and had served as president. She also taught home nursing courses. For many years, she was a church organist and choir director. She and Pete enjoyed 17 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. Also, they enjoyed square dancing for 20 years. She spent the last three and a half years at Thornton Manor where she received much tender and loving care. Dolores is survived by her spouse, Peter Hartley of New Albin; three sons, Patrick (Michelle) Hartley of Portage, Wis., Michael (Mary Ann) Hartley of
La Crosse, Daniel (Sally) Hartley of Salix, Iowa; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Dolores was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Meyer. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2002, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin. Burial will be in St. Joesph's cemetery, New Albin. Friends may call on Friday, October 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the New Albin Townhouse and Chapel. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing was in charge of the arrangements. Casketbearers were Tom Zeimet, Joe Reburn, Jim Moore, Norbert Schulte, Jim Hosch, and Tim Heiderscheit.
