Norene E. Manderscheid, age 86, a life-long Lansing resident, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., after suffering a major stroke.

Norene was born on the family farm west of Lansing on August 6, 1916, to William E. and Selma (Laabs) Batteen. Norene graduated from the Four-Mile School in 1929 and the Lansing High School in 1933, with a fine academic and sports record. In sports, she was recognized for her accomplishments in basketball and tumbling.

She married William J. Manderscheid on September 3, 1942, at St. Patrick's Rectory in Waukon. For the past 32 years, Norene operated the Lansing Valley Mobile Home Park west of Lansing. After the death of her husband, she also worked parttime at Brown's Department Store and the Lansing IGA. In her business dealings, she was always friendly and accommodating. Throughout her life, Norene was a very good friend to children, a neighbor who cared very much about the well-being of elderly persons in the neighborhood, and a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her family, neighbors, and friends. The Lansing community has lost a kind and gentle person. Norene is survived by two children, Ronald W. (Frances) Manderscheid of Potomac, Md., and Mary (Roger) Reed of Lansing, and five grandchildren.

Norene was preceded in death by her spouse William on August 17, 1970; a son, William P. Manderscheid (who was killed in an automobile accident) on July 1, 1966; and two brothers, Arnold and Harris. Funeral services were held 9:30 a.m., Monday, September 30, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Msgr. Funke officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Casketbearers were Vince Mullarkey, Jerry Bartheld, Sam Kuhn, William Kelleher, Verlyn Hayes, and Maurice Hart.
