Leonard Louis Koenig

Funeral services for Leonard Koenig, 87, were Monday, March 26, at 11 a.m., St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Rev. Steve Brackett officiated. Special music was provided by organist Marian Schutte and soloist, Kim Schutte. Casket Bearers were, Tami Clarke, Tara Breon, Brandon Marsh, Brent Johnson, Joseph Koenig, Dawn Koenig and Danielle Koenig. Honorary Casket Bearers were the staff of the Postville Good Samaritan Center. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Louis Charles Koenig was born Sept. 20, 1919, to Fred Henry Koenig and Alma Anna Sophia Schlie Koenig, at the family home near Castalia. He died Friday, March 23, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville.

He was baptized Oct. 1, 1919 by Pastor E. Schmidt in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and confirmed there April 9, 1933 by Pastor R. B. Garten. Leonard attended the Oak Hill School near his home.

Leonard married Florence Esther Snitker Jan. 20, 1943 at the home of her parents in Ludlow Township, near Waukon. Leonard worked as a hired farm hand in the area, including Monona, Garnavillo, Ossian and Postville. The past 22 years, he met many people through his work as a DHIA Supervisor as he traveled throughout the area.

Leonard loved to drive, and one of his favorite pastimes was going for a ride to see if he could spot an eagle riding on the wind, a deer grazing along the road, or a flock of wild turkeys. He was a baseball fan, especially following the Cubs and then the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed blue grass music, and playing cards with his family. Leonard became a resident of the Postville Good Samaritan Center in 2001, where he spent many hours working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include twin daughters, Karen West, Decorah, and Sharon (Gary) Johnson, Cresco, and a son, James (Darlene) Koenig, Byron, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Tami (Chris) Clarke, Tara (John) Breon, Brandon (Sarah) Marsh, Brent (Jennifer) Johnson, Joseph Koenig, Dawn Koenig, Danielle Koenig; eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Clarke, Andrew Clarke, Nathan Breon, Kylee Breon, Nicholas Breon, Megan Marsh, Matthew Marsh, Claire Johnson; two brothers, Harlan (Lorraine) Koenig, Postville; Verne (Ardith) Koenig, Decorah; sisters-in-law, Ruby Koenig, Postville, Bernice Koenig, Decorah, Gwenn Koenig, Marion, Laverne Koester, West Union, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Florence (March 11, 1984), two sons, Leon (1964) and Ronald (1967), and three brothers, Milton, Loren, and Earl.

Leonard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
