Vernon LeRoy

Vernon Arthur LeRoy, 90, of Pensacola, FL passed away at the Haven of Our Lady of Peace nursing home in Pensacola Thursday, March 22, 2007. A Memorial Service was held in the Chapel at the Haven of Our Lady of Peace in Pensacola Monday, March 26. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Haven of Our Lady of Peace, 1900 Summit Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32503.

Vernon was born in South Bend, IN March 28, 1916 to Halsey Scoville LeRoy and Martha Leland Brewer. His maternal grandmother was Sarah Martin, and Vernon was proud of the fact that published genealogy books traced the Martin family back to their voyage from Weymouth, England to a place they called Weymouth, MA in 1635, 15 years after the Pilgrims landed. The family is further traced to Martin de Toure, whose sister was the mother of St. Patrick of Ireland.

Vernon was working with his father designing and building residential and commercial buildings in Marianna, FL when he met and married Ada Alice Nichols of Two Egg, FL. He became a flight instructor for Spartan Aviation in Tulsa, OK, where he trained many students, including Army Air Corps cadets, and one Ben Hogan. In 1944 he accepted a pilot position with United Airlines, along with his brother, Warren. His first airplane was the Douglas DC-3. During World War II he flew in the Air Transport Command, carrying troops and supplies to the Pacific Theater of operations. Captain LeRoy retired in 1976 while flying the Boeing B-747 between Chicago and Honolulu.

His wife, Ada, died in 1995 and Captain LeRoy moved to Eustice, FL. In 1999, he married Mary Lou Peters, and moved with her to Pensacola in 2004.

Captain LeRoy was predeceased by three brothers and a sister; Lloyd, Warren, Ferris, and Charlotte Ann. He is survived by Mary Lou and his two sons, James (Rosemary) and John (Gail Nickelsen), who also flew Captain for United Airlines. He also leaves his beloved, faithful friends (sister-in-law and brother-in-law), Eloise Croft and H. Lathan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Cynthia Kay LeRoy Elwyn (Ben), James Vernon LeRoy, Jr. (Joan), Matthew David LeRoy, Jeffrey Sanford LeRoy, Captain Mark Warren LeRoy, Pamela Lynn LeRoy Miller (Peter), and Mary Elizabeth LeRoy; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel in Pensacola, FL was in charge of arrangements.
