John Henry (or Louis) Hirth

Death came quietly and peacefully at 4 o'clock yesterday morning, March 7, J. H. Hirth, at the family home on North 2nd Street, following a long illness with heart trouble. He had been sick since before last Thanksgiving and had spent some weeks in a La Crosse hospital, but showing improvement, he was brought home some time ago. Failing rapidly the past week, he was about to be taken back to the hospital, when death came to his relief.

Deceased was born Sept. 4, 1859, in French Creek township, the eldest son of the late Louis and Catherine Hirth, pioneer settlers there. He was never married and at the age of 19 joined the Methodist Church of Mays Prairie, confessing his faith to it in 1880, and was for many years a Sunday School teacher there. All his long life was exemplified in following true Christian principles, and his honesty and integrity were never questioned. Modest and unassuming, kind and charitable, he performed many good deeds unknown save to himself. For many years he was an expert mechanic and windmill repair man, and his services were in demand far and wide as long as he was able. This naturally gave him a wide acquaintance-ship of friends, who will join us in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones left to mourn.

Surviving are two brothers, Louis and William; and two sisters, Emma at home and Mrs. Anna Sandry, of Church; also one nephew and six nieces; besides a large circle of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at the family home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Henry Marks, pastor of the German Presbyterian church.. Interment will be made in the family lot in Mays Prairie cemetery; and the following old friends will act as pall bearers: Fred and Moritz Gruber, John Decker, Con Casey, Dewey Gramlich and Fred Schafer.

Johns' middle name was Henry or Louis?
