Mrs. Fred Smith, daughter of the deceased parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hahn, was born in Lewiston, Minn., on the 2nd of March in the year of 1878. She attended public and religious schools in Lewiston and as a young girl did housework in various homes in this community.

In the year 1899 she entered into Holy Matrimony with Fred Smith. Soon after their marriage, they moved to the neighborhood of Dorchester, Ia. where they worked on the Hartley farm.

While living there, they became affiliated with Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church. Here their children were born and reared. In the year 1929, they moved to La Crosse, Wis.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed the best of health until the latter part of the past year, when the years of her high old age weighted heavily upon her. God spared her the agony and pain when He suddenly, but quietly, called her to her eternal rest last Monday. (3 August 1959)

Those who mourn her departure are her life mate, Mr. Fred Smith of La Crosse, Wis.; four sons and two daughters, namely: Wilfred of Waukon, Ia.; Thomas, John and Merle or La Crosse, Wis.; Mrs. Floyd Kumpf of Dorchester, Ia.; Mrs. Obert Haugstad of Caledonia, Minn.; one brother, Earl Hahn of Waukon, Ia.; three sisters, Mrs. Russell (Barbara) Lane of Waukon, Ia., Mrs. Roy (Lena) Sires of Postville, Ia. and Mrs. Daniel (Anna) Sires of New Albin, Ia.; 16 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Grace Methodist Church, New Albin, Ia., with the Rev. E. DeBuhr officiating. Burial was made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
