The funeral of John Edward Burroughs was held at Mount Hope church Wednesday with burial in the English Bench cemetery.
Mr. Burroughs met accidental death Saturday evening last when he was killed by lightning on a farm near Vinton, Iowa. About 6:30 he went on horseback after the cows, just as a thunderstorm was gathering. His wife is fearful of lightning and when he did not appear at the house after the storm broke, she mistrusted his plight and sought for him. She found his lifeless body lying beside the horse which he had ridden and which was also killed presumably by the same bolt, as the rider still held the reins in his hands. The bolt had entered his body just above the right eye, passed down the front of his body, burning patches of flesh in its path, and passed out at his thigh, when it entered the body of the horse.
Deceased was born at Dorchester, this county, October 29, 1890, being near thirty-one years of age at death. He resided for some time in and near Waukon and on April 7, 1913, he was married to Miss Mary G. Olmstead of Montana, also a former Waukon resident.
To this union four children were born, all of whom are living: Lyle Amy, aged 7, Kenneth Alvin 5, Allen Harvey 3, and Donald John, three months.
Besides his wife and children, he leaves his parents, John and Alice (Sheriff) Burroughs, and five brothers and four sisters, as follows: Wm. H. of Waukon; Harvey L. Lorence G., Jasper J, Manfurd S. Mrs. Evie Schultz and Misses Alice and Winnie of Dorchester, and Mrs. Lydia Styir of Caledonia, Minn. His grandmother, Mrs. Evelyne Reeder of Dorchester, also survives.
Deceased was a member of the Yeomen and Woodman lodges. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. T. Reagan at Mount Hope Presbyterian church.
