James E. “Jim” Schomers, 68, of New Albin, IA, and formerly of La Crosse, WI, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at Gundersen/Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born April 20, 1934, in La Crosse, to John C. “Webb” and Irene (O’Neill) Schomers. Jim is a 1953 graduate of Aquinas High school in La Crosse. He then served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for four years and then the U.S. Army for three years. In 1957, Jim married Marie Therese Toussaint in Toul, France and she preceded him in death on January 5, 1980. Jim was employed at Trane Company in La Crosse and retired from Altec in La Crosse in 1999.
When he wasn’t working, Jim could usually be found on the river. He was a commercial fisherman and also enjoyed hunting and trapping. As an avid sportsman, Jim was a member of the Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Since his retirement, Jim was able to spend much time with his children and grandchildren which meant a lot to him.
Survivors include six children: Joanne (Scott Woodard) Krenzke, Brownsville, John (Patty Donahue) Schomers, New Albin, Jeff Schomers, La Crosse, Jerry (Tina) Schomers, La Crescent, Jackie Ochsner, Santa Monica, CA and Julie (Mike Nehls) Schomers, New Albin; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan (Leo) Mckenna, Winona; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, “Jack”.
In addition to Marie Therese, Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janice Hauser.
A Mass of Resurrection will be Thursday, November 7, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Albin, with Msgr. E.W. Lechtenberg as celebrant of the mass. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, his body will be cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. The Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia is in charge of arrangements.
