Lt. Col. John Mulvenna, retired, 67, of Bettendorf, IA, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 10, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center West Campus, Davenport, IA, following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 27, 1935 in Waukon, IA, to William H. and Helen M. (Pratt) Mulvenna. He married Evelyn “Lum” Feipel on September 20, 1958 in Dubuque, IA at St. Faephel’s Cathedral. John attended Loretto High school, Caledonia and received a degree in Sociology from the former Park College, Parkville, MO.
John began a career in the U.S. Army, which spanned 21 years. During this time he was stationed and assigned to several parts of the country. He participated in the Vietnam War and at the time of his retirement in 1975 had achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. He owned and operated Dix-Lum’s Carpeting, Leavenworth, KS, for many years. He then moved to Iowa and most recently was associated with Ruhl Realty Management. He was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf; was a former member of Rotary International; and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and most especially spending time with his family and many friends.
Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Evelyn; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Don Romough, Osseo, Karen and Frank Rogers, Scottsdale, AZ; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Glorianne Mulvenna, Spring Grove, William Mulvenna, Jr, Cape Coral, FL, and Michael and Barb Mulvenna, Lake Forest, CA; a sister-in-law, Helen Mulvenna, Chicago, IL; a brother-in-law, Vern Palen, Scottsdale, AZ; many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and many dear friends throughout the country.
His parents, a brother, James Mulvenna; a sister, Mary Jane Palen; and a sister-in-law, Terri Mulvenna, preceded him in death.
Services were held Monday, January 13, at noon at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf with burial in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Military rites were conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of American Q.C. Chapter 299. Visitation was Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home with a prayer service at 2 p.m.Caledonia Argus 13 Jan 2003
