Hilda Dorothea Frieda Martha Cordes, 94, formerly of Eitzen, MN, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at The Lutheran Home, Caledonia. She was born March 10, 1908, in Jefferson Township, MN, to William and Mary (Meyer) Beneke. Hilda was baptized April 12, 1908 and confirmed April 9, 1922, by Rev. Karl Bizer at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Wheatland, Union City township, Iowa. She attended eight years of school at District 106.
On June 1, 1932, Hilda married William H. Cordes at St. John’s U.C.C., Wheatland. Together they lived and farmed most of their married life on the Cordes farm in Winnebago township, MN. Due to failing health, Hilda and William moved to the Buckley Apartments in Caledonia in February of 1994 and in July of 1998 they moved into the Caledonia Lutheran Home. On January 6, 2000, William preceded Hilda in death.
Hilda loved to sew and sewed for many others and she also made many quilts. Hilda also loved gardening and she enjoyed her flowers.
Survivors include her son, Rowland (Vilas) Cordes, Eitzen; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Oitzman, Caledonia; and two brothers, William Jr. (Hilda) Beneke, Eitzen and Walter Beneke of Caledonia.
In addition to her husband, Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Ella Wiegrefe, Alma Kannenberg, Frieda Meyer, Olga Morey and Hanna Wieland; and three brothers, Edwin, Louis and Martin Beneke.
Services will be Thursday, June 20, 2 pm at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen with Rev. Paul Burgess officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke’s North Cemetery, Eitzen. Friends may call at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia on Wednesday from 5-7 pm and at the church on Thursday from 1 pm until the time of service.
