Margaret Mellick

Margaret E. Mellick, 96, died peacefully Tuesday, September 19, 2006, in her home as her family kept vigil. She was born October 7, 1909, at home in Hanover, rural Waukon, Iowa. She was the youngest child and only daughter of Patrick and Anastasia (Byrnes) Delaney. Prior to Margaret's arrival, her parents suffered the loss of three infant sons. So when Margaret was born at home, she was immediately taken to the parish church to be baptized and thus brought into the faith she loved and lived steadfastly her whole life.

Later in life, Margaret acknowledged that as a child she was a bit spoiled. Her parents and older brother James showered her with attention. Subsequent to her early education at the country school, she was fortunate to attend boarding school, first at Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque and then graduating from St. George's in Lansing, Iowa.

Margaret was united in marriage in August 1945 to Francis J. Mellick of West Ridge, rural Waukon. They were blessed with a daughter, Mary and son, Michael. They relocated to La Crosse to raise their family. In addition to raising her family, Margaret first worked at the former Grandview Hospital, then the former Hopkins Drug Store, and finally at the State Bank. Before retiring at age 84, Margaret worked for the bank for 44 years, longer than any other employee or tenant.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Mary M. Jenks of La Crosse, and her daughter-in-law, Dorothy of Finland, Minn.; Mary's children, Jim Jenks of La Crosse, Theresa Hether of Hokah, Minn., Susan (Darrell) Olson of Galesville, Wis., and Monica (Michael) Leis and Jean Gadow of La Crosse; her son's children, Corrine (Greg) Moran of Holmen, Wis., Sandra Mellick of La Crosse, Andrew (Rachel) Mellick of New Brighton, Minn., and Paul Mellick of Winston, N.C.

She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Christopher (Jessica) Burks, Joseph and Kathryn Gadow, Margaret and Mayanna VanderSchaaf, Shawnna, Jeffrey and Lauren Bell, Zebediah Burks, Tanner Olson, Michael and Meaghan Leis, Mike Hether, Kathleen (Brian) Gaines and their children, Tyra, Bailey, and Storm Gaines.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Bernard, John Joseph, an infant brother, and her beloved brother James; her husband Francis; son Michael; grandson Jeffrey; great-granddaughter Maria; and grandson Christopher.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 23, 2006, in the Marian Chapel at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral with the Rev. Roger Scheckel presiding. Entombment was in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at the Catholic Cemetery La Crosse. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse assisted the family with arrangements.
