Ruth Lenth, of Postville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, in Palmer Lutheran Health Center at West Union. She was 93.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 20, in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Reverend Steve Brackett officiated. Joann Martins was the organist. Casket bearers were family members: Barry Lenth, Bruce Lenth, Bradley Lenth, Brian Lenth, Kent Gummert, and Larry Kriener. Honorary casket bearers were: Deanne Gummert, Debra Lenth, Angie Lenth, Laura Lenth, Dawn Lenth, and Julie Kriener. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Ruth Anna Hilma (Meyer) Lenth was born Sept. 16, 1913, the fifth child of Henry C. and Bertha (Krambeer) Meyer in their farm home just west of Postville in Post Township, Allamakee County, west of Postville.
She was baptized Oct. 5, 1913 by the Reverend R. Kuhne at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and confirmed Aug. 14, 1927 by the Reverend John Voelk in Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. Ruth graduated from Postville High School in 1931. She received her Normal Training Teaching Certificate on her 18th birthday, which permitted her to teach in the rural schools. That year she was a substitute teacher in various local country schools. Later she taught for a few years at the Grand Meadow No. 7 and Bloomfield No. 7 schools.
On Dec. 19, 1936, Ruth was married to Harvey J. Lenth by the Reverend William Striepe in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. They farmed east of Postville until the death of Harvey, on Aug. 9, 1968. Ruth moved to Postville on Feb. 12, 1969. She was employed at the Good Samaritan Center when it opened in May of 1969 and later at the Postville Community School kitchen from 1973 to 1983.
Ruth was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, and a past member of the Grand Meadow Country Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey's parents, Gustav and Anna Lenth; her husband; four sisters, Ethel Meyer, Amy Harris, Hilda Martins, and Leona Bachtell; a brother, Lorence; her step father, Charles Ulish and step sister, Eunice Fahey; a sister-in-law, Ferne Lenth; and five brothers-in-law, R. R. Harris, John J. Martins, Robert Bachtell, Lloyd Lenth, and Gerhardt Landgrebe.
Surviving are her three children, Richard and wife, Eldeen, Cedar Rapids, Jerome and wife, Mary, Postville, and Jeanine, with whom she made her home, Postville; seven grandchildren, Deanne (Kent) Gummert, Des Moines, Debra Lenth, Marion, Barry Lenth, Olathe, Kan., Bruce (Angie) Lenth, Parker, Colo., Bradley (Laura) Lenth, Swisher, Brian (Dawn) Lenth, Coralville, Julie (Larry) Kriener, Ridgeway; eight great grandchildren, Jack Gummert, Maria and Max Lenth, Mikaley and Kearsten Lenth, Alexis, Cole, and Kala Kriener, and Bruce and Angie's expected baby daughter, four step great grandchildren, Jordan, Jaden, and Justice Yordi, and Kalen Rios.
Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Bernita and husband, George Voelker, Miller, S.D., a brother-in-law, Harold Lenth and wife, Helen, and many nieces and nephews.
