Dr. James C. Hartley, 68, of Waukon, formerly of New Albin, died Saturday, October 14, 2006 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday October 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Albin. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. scripture service. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is in charge of arrangements.

James Charles Hartley was born June 22, 1939 in Waukon, the son of Charles E. and Marion (Ryan) Hartley. He grew up in the New Albin area, being baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attending Clear Creek rural elementary school. In 1957 he graduated from Waukon High School, where he was acitve in 4-H and FFA. Jim continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, where he received a B.S. in Dairy Husbandry, an M.S. in Dairy Microbiology, and a Ph.D. in Food Technology. His working career was dedicated to quality control in food processing. He began in Davenport, then served as a research and teaching assistant at Iowa State while he earned his advanced degrees. He moved on to the University of Kentucky, where his duties included spending several months in Uruguay as a consultant for the Organization of American States to improve milk quality. Jim worked in Omaha and Columbus, NE from 1976 until 1983, where he headed up the quality assurance and new product development divisions for two major food marketers. For the next 12 years he was Quality Control Manager for Schnuck Markets, Inc. of St. Louis, Mo, overseeing all of their laboratory procedures. In 1995, health complications forced retirement from his career and he returned to New Albin to be closer to his family.

Jim maintained an active pace throughout his life. He was a member of numerous professional and academic associations related to the dairy and food industries. No matter where he was living, he stayed in close contact with his home area of New Albin and returned as often as possible to enjoy the outdoors, whether that be hunting, fishing or helping on the farm. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed skiing, bowling and traveling and had developed particular skills in the areas of woodworking and photography.

Survivors include his mother, Marion Hartley of New Albin; a brother, Joseph (Joan)) Hartley of Seneca, Wi; a sister, Mary Ellen (Lyle) Mohwinkle of Waukon; a sister-in-law (rest is cut off)(see below....)
