Grace Havelicek 1911-2002

Grace Evelyn Havelicek, 90, of Monona, Iowa, died Wednesday evening, August 7, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa, following an extended illness. She was born on August 22, 1911, in Postville to Alonzo and Hazel (Harris) Folsom. Grace attended rural country school through the eighth grade. Grace married Leo R. Havlicek on May 20, 1933, at Lycurcus, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Grace and Leo farmed together until they moved to Monona in 1953. They ran a grocery store in Gunder. Grace was a cook at St. Patrick's Catholic School in Monona for many years. After Leo passed away in March of 1967, Grace cooked at a Medical Fraternity for five years until she retired. She is survived by three daughters, Helen Meyer of Monona, Joanne (Patrick) Keleher of Elkader, Connie (Ronald) Thornton of Monona; one sister,Leone Morrison of Osage; nine grandchilren, Dwight (Kim) Hanson, Susan (Keith) Shykes, Barb (Mike) Neff, Tom (Teri) Keleher, Jerry (Monica) Keleher,Lonnie (Paula) Thornton, Jonnie Thornton, Timmy Thornton, Toby Thornton, and seventeen great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her parents; one son, Gerald in 1956; one sister, Mabel Simpson; one granddaughter, Julie Keleher; one great-grandson, Christopher Shykes; and three sons-in-law, Otto Hanson Jr., Marlow Gisleson, and Bill Meyer. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, August 10,2002 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. The Rev. John W. Moran officiated with burial following in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Monona.
