Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon at his home in Lansing for Andrew H. Hirth, well known resident and retired farmer. Rev. DeWitt Stauffer, pastor of Calvary Evangelical church, officiated and said the prayers at the graveside. Burial was made in the Mays Prairie cemetery. Deceased had been ailing only a few days and passed away about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15th, presumably from a heart attack.
Andrew Hirth, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Hirth who were pioneer settlers on Mays Prairie, was born on the old homestead there Aug.6, 1858, and would have been 81 years old next August. His education was received in the rural schools, and on May 6, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Munz, who preceded him in death in March, 1938, They had no children, and continued farming until 1905 when they moved to Lansing which was their home ever since.
Mr. Hirth was known as a very successful farmer and stock raiser and even though retired for many years took an active part in the management of his large land holdings in this county, the Hirth & Gang farm on the Iowa River being well known in this part of the state. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his brothers Louis and Adam, and sisters Mrs. Adam Decker and Mrs. William Wendel. One aged sister, Mrs. Anna May, 83, of Victoria, B.C., and Glen Clark, whom they raised, survive, besides a large number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral Sunday was largely attended by neighbors and old-time friends, and the following acted as casket bearer: George Decker, Erwin Ashbacker, Theodore and George Munz, J. W. Wendel and Kermit Hirth.
