Funeral services for Paul Zidlicky were held Thursday, April 6, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated. The organist was Joann Martins. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casketbearers were Larry Hasselbusch, Steve Hirl, Gary Zidlicky, Steve Christensen, Roger Allen, Justin Readhead, Steve Christensen, Jr., and Dwight Bacon. Honorary casketbearers were the Members of the Board of Directors and Employees of the Postville Farmers Co-op, Tindell's Shoes, and the Pit Stop.
Paul H. Zidlicky, Jr., the son of Paul Harry Zidlicky, Sr., and Laura Bernice (Kingsley) Zidlicky, was born March 31, 1945 near Lime Springs, Iowa. He passed away Sunday, April 2, 2000 in Gundersen Lutheran Health Center at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was 55 years old.
Paul was graduated from Maquoketa High School, attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a degree in Animal Science.
On August 26, 1967 he was married to Patricia Trimble in the First Lutheran Church at Maquoketa. Paul was called to serve in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Berlin for 18 months.
Following his return from Berlin, Paul and Pat lived in DeWitt, Iowa for two years where he was employed in sales by the Ralston Purina Company, and then moved to Montezuma for two years. Paul purchased a feed dealership in Stanwood where he lived for 20 years. They came to Postville in September of 1994 where he accepted a job at the Postville Cooperative.
As a boy, Paul had taken piano lessons and was often called upon to provide the music for church and community gatherings. He had learned to play the organ and he had served as church organist for many years. When his children were growing up the family often took camping trips with the grandparents.
Paul had many interest including duck hunting and collecting coins. The last few years he had enjoyed fishing, especially with his fishing buddy Jake Kjosa. He liked yard work and wood working. He enjoyed his neighbors and had been teaching English to one of them who had recently come to this country.
He was active in the community and had been a past member of the Jaycees, served two terms on the School Board at Stanwood, including President of the Board, and been an EMT for the ambulance service for seven years.
He is preceded in death by his father.
Surviving is his wife, Pat, his children, Eric of Minneapolis, Jacob and his wife, Holly, of Barrington, Illinois, and Amy of Ankeny, Iowa. Also surviving is his mother, Laura, of Oelwein, Iowa, a sister, Jolynn and her husband, Tom Lottman, of Morton, Illinois, and a niece, Mindy Christian, of Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Paul was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church in Stanwood, Iowa and attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
