Gerald W. Kurth, 89, of Waukon, Iowa, died Friday, January 13, 2006, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 17, at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Emil “Walter” Kurth was born April 12, 1916, in Giard Township rural Clayton County, Iowa, the son of Walter Sr. and Florence A. (Schiff) Kurth. He attended elementary schools in Clayton and Allamakee Counties.

October 28, 1937, he married Inez E. Bechtel at Decorah Methodist Church in Decorah, Iowa. After they were married they farmed in the Franklin Township where they managed a dairy herd and raised crops. He also sold Cornelius Seed Corn. Gerald and Inez moved to Waukon in 1981. He continued to help his son Dale with the farming operation.

Gerald was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where he served as a trustee for several years. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, served as a delegate for Tri-State Breeders Association, and on the Maple Dale country school board in Franklin Township. Gerald loved to play cards and his favorites were euchre and five hundred. He enjoyed listening to music, dancing, fishing, and eating out. Gerald liked to visit and spend time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Curtis (Judith) of Reedsburg, Wis., Diane (Lyle) Moose of Waukon, Iowa, and Dale (Virginia) of Luana, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gilbert (Delores) of Luana and Walter Jr. (Janice) of Waukon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Inez, who died in 1992.

Casketbearers were Ron and Darrell Moose, Joel, Brian, Adam and Garrett Kurth, and Chris Riley.
