Harold Frederick Fish was born June 4, 1941, in Waukon, Iowa, to Fred Edward and Doris E. (Decker) Fish. He was a life-long member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he was baptized and confirmed and later taught Sunday School. Harold graduated from Waukon High School in 1959. He attended and played football at Buena Vista in Storm Lake and Luther College in Decorah. During his time at Luther he was drafted into the US Army and served until 1967, seeing a tour of duty in Vietnam.
January 16, 1966, he married Janeth Rae Cook at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, Va. After the service he returned to northeast Iowa and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Harold spent many years, first working at, and later owning and operating Jacobi’s Clothing in Waukon. During a career change, he finished a degree in political science at Concorde College in Athens, W.V. The past ten years he had been a meter reader for Alliant Energy.
Harold was a sports fan all of his life, but also an outstanding football player himself. He played on an undefeated high school team, was on the college team at both Buena Vista and Luther, and once received a letter from the Chicago Bears asking him to try out for the team. He loved the outdoors and truly enjoyed a number of backpacking trips to the Rocky Mountains with a variety of friends as well as his family.
