The sad news reaches us of the Death of Carrie, the little six-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Hays of Waukon. She died last Thursday, of scarlet fever in its most violent form. She was stricken one day and died the next.
Carrie was a lovely child and was idolized by her parents and was the pet of all who knew her. But --
"She's gone! Forever gone! The king of terrors
Lays his rude hands upon her lovely limbs,
And blasts her beauty with his icy breath."~North Iowa Journal, Wednesday, May 24, 1876; pg 3

DIED. At Waukon, on Friday, of Scarlet Fever, Carrie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Hays, in her 5th year.
~Lansing Mirror, Friday, May 26, 1876, pg 3
Note: The 'Woodmansee' cemetery book includes an entry in Oakland (Main) for Caroline Bentley Hays, 7/31/1871-5/19/1876, buried in the family lot of George Washington Hays & his wife Emily. This is more than likely little Carrie.
