J. C. Schroeder Passes on Sunday
Was Respected and Industrious Local Farmer
John C. Schroeder, a highly respected resident of this locality, passed on at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Ruckdaschel, at 9:30 a. m. on Sunday, August 5, 1934, at the age of 69 years nine months and 12 days.
He was born October 23, 1864, in Passow, Germany, and at the age of 23 years emigrated to this country, locating near Clayton Center and chosing farming as his life’s occupation.
In the year 1890 he was married to Caroline Miene, and to this union four children were born, two of whom survive, the others having died in infancy. In the year 1902 the wife and mother preceded him in death.
In the year 1908 he married Mrs. Rosina Oestman of Goodell, Iowa. The family lived on a farm on Henderson Prairie up to the year 1928. In this year he and his children were again bereft of a wife and mother as the result of an accident.
He made his home with the family of his stepson, Fritz Oestman, up to his last illness about seven months ago, when he was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Ruckdaschel, where he was lovingly cared for until his demise.
He was an honest and upright man and held in high esteem by many friends.
He is survived by his children, Arthur of Castalia, Anna Ruckdaschel of Postville, Fritz and Willie Oestmann [sic] of Postville, eight grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
The funeral was held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city, at two o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, Dr. R. B. Garten officiating. Interment was made in Postville cemetery.
