John Schroeder Passes on Friday
Born in Germany, He Had Lived Here Many Years
At about three o’clock on Friday morning, March 16, 1934, the soul of John Joachim Henry chroeder, an old and highly respected citizen of this community passed away at the age of 84 years, five months and two days.
He was born in Gohren, Mecklenburg, Germany, October 14, 1849, and was baptized in infancy. On Palm Sunday, 1864, he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Eldana, Mecklenberg.
In 1868 at the age of 19 years, he came to America, landing in New York in June and came to Postville making his home with Henry Eggert Sr., and later on with John Palas Sr., near St. Olaf.
In 1873 he was united in marriage with Mary Schmidt of Clayton Center, and went on the farm near Postville. To this union were born two children, one daughter and one son, namely Mrs. Emma Brandt of Castalia and John H. W. Schroeder of this city. The wife preceded him in death on February 26, 1898, and four years later he moved to Postville, building the home where he lived until his death.
He then married Mrs. Lizzie Kluss and after a lingering illness she passed away.
On December 18, 1906, he was married to Mrs. Mary Brandt, and to this union was born one son, Gilbert.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Schroeder, one daughter, Mrs. John Brandt of Castalia; two sons, John of this city and Gilbert at home; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends.
He was an honest and upright man, a kind and accommodating neighbor, a true friend, an affectionate husband and father, and he will be greatly missed in the community where most of his earthly years were passed.
Funeral services were held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at two o’clock Monday afternoon, March 19th, Dr. R. G. Garten officiating. Interment was made in Postville cemetery.
