John Ryan

John Emmett Ryan, age 83, of Guttenberg died Saturday, October 13, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral service will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, with Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Guttenberg. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 16 at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Guttenberg and one hour before the service at the church.

John was born August 20, 1929 in Waukon, the son of Emmitt John and Gertrude (Ronan) Ryan. John received his education and graduated from Waukon High School in 1948. After school, John enlisted in the Army where he served 33 months in a POW Camp.

July 3, 1956, John was married to Carol Meyer in Galesville, WI. John and Carol moved to Guttenberg in 1961, where John worked at Lock and Dam #10 for 30 years until his retirement. When John had some free time, he enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time in his workshop, and watching his beloved Packers and the Cubs. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

John will be forever loved and cherished by his wife of 56 years, Carol; seven children, Sandy (John) Steighner of Cedaredge, CO, Denise (Steve) Ryan Silkworth of Highland Ranch, CO, Michelle (Martin) Behrend and Mike Ryan, both of Guttenberg, Karen (Robin) Ryan of Minburn, Maureen (Robert) Ryan of Oxford, WI, and Teresa (Werner) Ryan of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Kathleen (Leo) Frett of Moline, IL; one brother, Dennis (Barbara) Ryan of Racine, WI; and many other relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark John Ryan; and two sisters, Phyllis and Mary.
