Leaving his home in apparent usual health at about 6:30 Tuesday morning, John H. Serene proceeded to the river where his boat was lying. In less than ten minutes he was a corpse.

It was the purpose of his son, Charles, to take Mr. Ackerman over the river to catch a Burlington train and when he attempted to start out it was found the gasoline engine would not work. The son hastened to the house and informed his father of the situation. Procuring a kettle of water Mr. Serene started for the boat which was lying in front of the Peers home. Reaching the railroad track, he suddenly dropped the kettle and throwing up his hands, fell to the ground.

His son supported him, and he was quickly carried to his home. But life had fled. -Lansing Mirror
