This community was cast into sorrow last Tues. morning, Mar 28, when news went about that Mrs. Nick Barbaras, who had been ill since last November, had died early that day at her home in this city, although her passing was expected for about a month. Mrs Barbaras was 75 years of age.
Bridget Rafter was born in Johnsonport, Fairview Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, March 1, 1858 a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Rafter. On December 27, 1880 she was married to Nicholas Barbaras at St. Joseph's Church, Paint Rock and two years ago they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Nine children were born to them, six of whom are living: Nicholas, Jr. of Cranford, NJ; Sister Mary Angela of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Mrs. W. J. Payne, and Mrs. John Bieser of Algona, Iowa; Mrs. F. K. Hobbs of Minneapolis and Miss Bernadette at home, all of whom were able to be in attendance at the funeral except Nicholas, Jr. She is also survived by Mr. Barbaras, four sisters, Misses Annie and Alice Rafter, and Mrs. J. J. Hawes of Harper Ferry and Mrs. Nicholson of Minneapolis, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral services were held from St. Anna's Church Thursday morning. Rev. Father Nolan celebrated the Requim Mass. Internment was made in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Paint Rock. The casket bearers being Leo Brazell, Thomas Cavanaugh, Ernst Guthneck, J. J. Rellihan, Bernard Valley and James Whalen.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Sister Mary Angela of the Mercy Order, she being accompanied by Sister Mary Emerita, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Payne and daughter Alice, Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Hobb, Mr. and Mrs. John Beiser, Mrs. Mike Nicholson and Mr. Will Rafter, a nephew, of Wabasha, Minnesota.
