Waukon, Iowa, Oct. 30 - John C. Beede was born near Augusta, Maine, Nov. 3, 1835, and died here Oct. 28.

He spent his early childhood in that city. When he was fourteen years of age he went to sea, engaging in cod and mackerel fishing in the summer and working in a store in the winter. In early life he learned the shoemaker's trade and followed it for years.

He was, while still in Maine, united in marriage with Miss Angie Gaslin in 1857. Mrs. Beede died Jan. 15, 1876, leaving eight children: Arthur S., of Oregon; LeRoy J., of South Dakota; Edgar L., also of Oregon' Mrs. E.A. Heath, of Alaska; Mrs. Cora L. Campbell,, of North Dakota; Mrs. Prof. L.W. Abbott, Minnesota; Albert W., of Waukon, and Fred, in Williston, N.D.

May 26th, 1877, Mr. Beede was united in marriage with Miss Mary T. Ryan, daughter of Thomas Ryan of Allamakee county, Iowa. Of their eight children, three survive. These are: John C., of Waukon; Mrs. W.J. Raymond and Mrs. Ernest Raymond, both at home with their mother.

Mr. Beede had moved from Maine to Iowa soon after his first marriage and settled in Allamakee county, remaining a citizen of this county until death. He took great interest in agricultural matters. He joined the Odd Fellows' fraternity in 1870 and has been a faithful fraternal member.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday, Oct. 30th, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Van Nice.
