Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Banks) Shaffer, widow of George W. Shaffer, died at her home, at 8:20 a.m. Sunday following a long illness. Born July 11, 1853, at Lansing, Ia., she came to Cedar Rapids 59 years ago. On Sept. 5, 1883, at Village Creek, Ia., she was married to George W. Shaffer, who died in 1940. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Frank Mittlestadt of Cedar Rapids; a son, Clark W. of Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Ruopps of Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. Nettie Wiley of Boone. She was a member of the Olivet Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be conducted in the Turner chapel at 4 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. E. Winslow Brown. Burial will be in Linwood cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
