A.E. Schwab Services Held

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Schultz Funeral home for A.E. Schwab, 78, with Rev. H.W. Farnham of the Methodist church conducting the service.

The hymn "Rock of Ages" was sung by Aldys Jane Schwab, a granddaughter, and two selections were sung by Mrs. George Wiethorn with Mrs. K.W. Rash as organist.

Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Lansing under the auspices of the local Masonic lodge with the Masonic burial service given by senator G.W. Hunt of Guttenberg. Mr. Schwab had just completed 50 years as a member of the Masonic order.

Pallbearers were Frank Bothel, Nick Cahoon, H.T. Orr, Dr. Robert Jasman, Joe Vaughan, H.S. Rittenhouse, E.G. Kaiser, and Frank Montgomery. The funeral procession was met at the cemetery by a large delegation of Lansing friends and masonic members to attend the last rites at the grave.

Adam Edward Schwab, son of Franz and Augustina Schwab, was born at Lancaster, Pa., Nov.28, 1863, and died at his home in Monona, June 9.

He came with his parents to Iowa in 1869, settling in Lansing where he grew to manhood and received his education in the public schools of that locality. At the age of 18 he entered the employ of Gaunitz Bros., a grocery firm at Lansing, where he remained until April, 1895, when he purchased the restaurant business of Tapper and Egbert. He soon converted the restaurant into a general store, later combining the business to the grocery and poultry line, continuing in business in Monona over a period of 47 years.

He was known to the people of this community as a man of high integrity, honest, and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men. Coming here in the early days, he helped build the town from a small village to its present wealth and prosperous state, doing his bit whenever called upon and helping in every way to make the community a better place in which to live.

He devoted his time principally to his family and his business. He was kind and considerate in his home and friendly with all his neighbors. Ed Schwab was a fair citizen who will be greatly missed by the entire community.

June 6, 1896 he was married to Miss Louise Schmidt of Lansing. They have one son, Floyd R., who is now with the United States army serving on his second enlistment, having served through the First World war.

Mr. Schwab had been in failing health for the last two years and for the last month was confined to his home. A sudden heart attack caused his death about 9 o'clock Tuesday evening June 9, while conversing with Mrs. Schwab at his home.

Surviving are his widow, a son, Floyd; two grandchildren, Aldys Jane and Gene Schwab; and two nieces, Clara and Anna Koehn of Lansing. Three sisters and a half brother preceded him in death.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral of Mr. Schwab last Friday were Mrs. R.C. Klinkenberg of Minneapolis, Minn., Anna and Clara Koehn, Mrs. Peter Zablotcky, Mrs. Sheriff, Mrs. Bechtel, and Ernest Lair of Lansing; and Floyd Schwab of Camp Shelby, Miss.
