Waukon, Ia - Funeral services were held at St. Ann's Catholic church at Harpers Ferry Monday morning for Mrs. Ella Whalen, 81, who died at the family home there Friday following a lingering illness.

A requiem mass was celebrated by the pastor, the Rev. John J. Costello. Burial was in the family lot in Wexford cemetery.

As Ella Donelan, she was born in Kentucky on June 21, 1854, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Donelan. When a small child, she came to Wexford with her parents. She received her education in the rural schools.

On June 9, 1871 she was married to Thomas Whalen of that vicinity. They lived on a farm until 1914 when they retired and moved to Harpers Ferry.

Mrs. Whalen is survived by six children: John of Harpers Ferry; Sister Ann of the Dominican order of Chicago; Mrs. Emily Reinert of Chicago; Frank of Kansas City; Mrs. Joseph Wagner of Wexford and James of Waukon; two brothers, Patrick and James Donelan, both of Montrose, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Webster and Mrs. Mary Jones, both of Emery, S.D.; and nine grandchildren.

Her husband, two sons and two daughters preceded her in death.
