Donald H. Stone, age 82, of Waukon, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. His body was deeded to the University of Iowa for medical research and family services will be held at a later date.

Donald Herschel Stone was born January 7, 1922, in Waukon, the son of Herschel Meredith and Julia Anna (Williams) Stone. He lived with his family in Lansing during the depression and he attended school there. From 1943 to 1948 he did two separeate tours of duty with the US Navy, serving as Pharmacist's Mate and Hospital Corpsman. Following the service, he returned to Iowa where he lived in Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Camanche, and Manchester doing a variety of different occupations. He then moved to Colorado where he spent many years as a truck drover for Mayflower Movers. In the early 1980s he returned to northeast Iowa and lived in Lansing until moving to Waukon in 1994.

Donald was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles, and studying Native American history.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Hall of Des Moines, Iowa, Anna Marie (Robert) Simoens of Walford, Iowa, and Regina (Lester) Anderson of Lombard, Ill.; a son, Donald Herschel (Rebecca) McHale of Coffeeville, KS.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Ethyl) Stone of Waukon; two sisters, Rita Murphy of Clinton, Iowa, and Georgia Glaus of Cedar Rapids; and a special friend, Roberta Alexander of Camanche, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Arden; four sisters, Jean Edmondson, Etta Dawson, Marjorie LeBlanc, and Judy Stone; and three brothers, Neil, Kenneth, and William Stone.
