Lawrence "Duke" Walleser, age 81, of Lansing, Iowa, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at his home in rural Lansing. Funeral services were held Monday, July 19, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Duke was born in Tilston, Manitoba, Canada, January 1, 1923, to John Joseph and Anna Henrietta (Berns) Walleser.

He was married to Esther Hammell May 26, 1948, at St. Joseph's Church, New Albin. He and Esther farmed in the Waukon, Harpers Ferry, and Lansing areas.

Duke enjoyed fishing and helping others with his carpentry skills. He built the house he and Esther lived in, along with other farm buildings. In recent years he loved to play cards and spend time with his grandkids.

Duke is survived by his wife, Esther Walleser of Lansing; 13 children, Mary (Dan) Delaney of Lansing, Karen (Bob) Batteen of Urbana, Iowa, Jean (Francis) Ottaway of McGregor, Iowa, Bess (Phillip) Anderson of Waterloo, Iowa, Allen (Diane) Walleser of Houston, Minn., Melvin (Christine) Walleser of Farmersburg, Iowa, Rita (Steve) Thom of Waukesha, Wis., Fred (Dora) Walleser of Lansing, Anita (Andy) Schauer of Belvidere, Ill., Esther Niedert of Chicago, Ill., Carl (Joan)Walleser of Senoia Ga., Byron (Betty) Walleser of Pickett, Wis., and Ted (Stacy) Walleser of Lansing; two daughters-in-law, Nancy Walleser of Harpers Ferry and Mary Dommie of La Crosse, Wis., a son-in-law, Alton Key of Madison, Wis., 40 grandchildren; seven great-children; and six siblings, Stan (Velma) Walleser of De Soto, Wis., Alice Griffin of Dayton, Ohio, Willi (Gerald) Finkral of Lansing, Isabelle (Bud) Hawes of Lansing, Phyllis (Lou) Kimsey of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Colleen (Del) Brown of Ft. Collins.

Duke was preceded in death by three children, Joe in 1990, Theresa in 2003, and Larry in 1983; two grandsons, William Delaney in 1993 and Michael Walleser in 1997; and also by five siblings, Edwin in 1997, Wilfred "Bill" in 2002, Helen Freiburger in 2003, Louis in 2003, and Francis "Chip" in 2003.

Casketbearers were Jesse Delaney, Scott Kay, Bob Batteen, Chad Walleser, Phillip Anderson, and Hans Walleser.
