George J. Riek, age 85, of Waukon, Iowa, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 6 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George Julius Riek was born December 16, 1918, in Lansing, Iowa, the son Clemens and Anga (Aschom) Riek. He was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing and later confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. He attended Lansing Schools.

On December 11, 1940, he married Alida Aure in Decorah. After they were married they farmed together in Center Township until 1960. He then went to work for Great Plains as a carpenter until his retirement in 1981. They lived in Lansing for several years before settling in Waukon. Since February 2003 he had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center.

George was a member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi river and wood working.

Survivors include his wife, Alida, and a son, Raymond Riek, both of Waukon; four grandchildren, Lisa (Dave) Christianson, Kim (Graham Cole) Riek, Kristie (Mike) Kaeser, and Brian (Angie Kramer) Riek; and two great-grandchildren, Cody Runice and Kiersten Christianson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clem; and a sister, Ethel Trimble.

Casketbearers were Daryl Christianson, Cody Runice, Wayne Kloke, Curt Roe, Ron Dahlstrom, and Bill Steffenson.
