Walter M. Gross, age 78, of Lansing, Iowa, died Monday morning, March 15, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Thursday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lansing with Rev. Keith Putney officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Military rites will be conducted at the church following services by the Beck-Glenn-Strong Post #50 of the American Legion and the Gustav F. Kerndt Post #5981 of the VFW.

Walter was born in Eldorado, Iowa, April 22, 1925, to Frederick and Elsie (Schatz) Gross. He was born and raised on a dairy farm and served the Army during World War II, being stationed in the Philippines and Japan.

He married Geneva Crain May 8, 1954, at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. He worked for Reyner Burial Vault Co. of West Union for 10 years from 1967 to 1977. In 1977, his family moved to Waterloo, where he worked for the Wilbert Burial Vault Co. of Waterloo. He retired in 1996.

He and his wife moved to Lansing following his retirement. During retirement, he enjoyed being around his family and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva of Lansing; one son, Kim (Sue) Gross of Merrill, Wis.; five grandchildren, Alan Gross of Sheboygan, Wis., Forrest (Stephanie) Gross of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Holly Gross of Merrill, Kyle Gross of Hartley, Iowa, and Andrea (Troy) Schlotman of Waterloo; four great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Alvin (Lilli) Gross of Eldorado and Clara (Kenneth) Trapp of Zionsville, Ind.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kendall, in 1999.
