Clara P. Winkie, 85, of Waukon, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a short illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 29 at 11 a.m. Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will be in the the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7p.m. Wednesday at Martins Funeral Home in Waukon.

Clara Petrina was born March 18, 1918, on the rural Waukon, Makee Township, farm of her parents, Herman and Inez (Hanson) Soride. She was confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, attended rural school at Ludlow #1 and #6, two years at Waukon High School, and in 1968 received her GED from NEIACC in Calmer.

On October 23, 1935, she married Emmet Paul Winkie at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Clara and Emmet farmed for many years in Ludlow Township before moving to Waukon in 1980. Clara has been a resident of Northgate Care Center in Waukon since 2001.

Clara was a member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church and its United Presbyterian Women, where she held numerous offices. She was also very active in Allamakee County Farm Bureau where she held office, sang in the Women's Choir, and worked with the family living council to counsel new young members. She served as a volunteer at Northgate Care Center for several years and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Clara enjoyed cooking, gardening, and playing cards. She also stayed active making crafts and sewing, and loved to visit with her friends and relatives.

Survivors include a son, Dean (Geraldine) Winke of Randalia, Iowa; five grandchildren, Marvin, Tammie, Jeff, Colt, and Kyle; three step-grandchildren, David, Linda, and Donald; and two great-grandchildren, Cory and Duncan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Emmet, who died in 1991; a son, Dirk; and infant daughter, Gerene; a sister, Dolores Roe; and a brother, Clifford Sorida.

Casketbearers are Jim, Ken, Darwin, and Richard Winke, Dennis Soride, and Larry Snitker.
