Mrs. Mary Ann Smith whose funeral was held last Wednesday was over 73 years old, and had been a sufferer for several years. The services were held in the Methodist church at Hardin and conducted by the Pastor of the United Brethren church of Castalia. She had been a member of the U.B. church for many years.

There were a good many of her old time friends present, the burial was in the Hardin Cemetery. Hardin H. Smith [sic: Horice H. Smith], her husband, and many relatives are left to mourn the loss of a christian wife and friend, as far as the writer knows she never had an enemy.

She was an exceptionally friendly woman, and was in her element when helping some one in need. She had great interest in church work, and was a willing helper as long as she felt able to do so, but failing health admonished her that she must care for herself and family first.

We have not been able to obtain the notice desired in time.

Of additional interest:

One week prior to her death in the McGregor News, Wednesday, February 13, 1907 (Luana column):
Geo. Oathout was visiting Horace H. Smith and wife at Hardin Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are confined to their home during cold weather and suffer more or less all the while with diseases that do not readily yield to treatment; they have good courage and keep as happy as possible under the circumstances. Comrade Smith contracted disease while in the military service was of 1861-5 which never lets up its grip on him
