When Mr. Dunning was about 18 years of age he went as a sailor on the great lakes where he spent five or six years when his father decided to come west and at the earnest request of his mother, Mr. Dunning came with them making the journey by team to Eggerton, Wis., where they tarried a part of a year, then came to Iowa where Mr. Dunning and the subject of this sketch took each a quarter-section of government land whichever since been his home.
March 13, 1861, Mr. Dunning and Miss Caroline Noble were united in marriage. To them were born three children: Mrs. Julius Nagle of Franklin, Twp., John and Frank who have always remained at home with their parents taking the best of care of them.
