The death of Andy Koontz, one of the old settlers of Rossville, took place Tuesday morning, resulting from a severe stroke of paralysis received a little over a week ago. Mr. Koontz was one of the pioneer businessmen of the county and for thirty years proprietor of a general store at Rossville. He was about 64 years of age. A wife and six children and the whole community mourn him.

Death has claimed one of our most noble citizens, A. F. Koontz. He died at his home Aug. 23 and was buried Aug. 25 in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Mr. Koontz has been a great sufferer for some time & his death was not unexpected. He was a man of good reputation & honorable & upright in his business career & made many friends who will never forget him. The Odd Fellows of the Allamakee lodge and a goodly members from Waukon took charge of the remains and went through their form of administrating the last sad rites for a deceased brother. The funeral was largely attended and all felt the loss of a very kind friend and neighbor. His death is universally mourned & the bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.

At his residence near Rossville, August 23rd, 1898, Andrew F. Koontz, aged 64 years, 8 months and 23 days. Mr. Koontz was born in Medina County, Ohio, Nov. 29, 1833 where he grew to manhood. He married Clara Ross April 24th, 1855. To them were born seven children, of whom 2 boys, M. A. R. Koontz of Rossville, J. F. Koontz of Humboldt, and Mrs. Alonzo Pettit of Rossville are living. His first wife died and he married Catherine Kuhne, Dec. 10, 1872. To them were born 3 boys, A. A., E. A., and F. C. Koontz, all of Rossville, who with his wife are left to mourn his loss. For 25 years he was an active, efficient member of the Rossville I.O.O.F. and filled every office of the lodge with honor, and for 15 years was its treasurer. For many years he was successfully engaged in the mercantile business. He was a great friend of the worthy poor, and many such remember him to bless him, but he was unostentatious in all his acts of kindness and neighborly love. The funeral was held at the house on the 25th, under the auspices of the Rossville I.O.O.F. lodge, assisted by Rev. R. L. Vannice of Waukon and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of the Order near by.
