Obituary
John E. Martin
John Edward Martin, son of Wm. and Mary Martin was born at Evansville, Ind., May 20, 1871, and passed to his eternal reward July 11, 1924 aged 53 years, 1 month and 21 days. In the spring of 1880 he came with this parents to Iowa, where he grew up and was known as the embodiment of splendid young manhood. On Jan. 13, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Ada J. Sadler, youngest daughter of the late William and Mary Sadler, who were among the pioneers of Union City twp. Five children came to add joy and sunshine to this happy marriage as follows, namely: Ridge William, John Edward, Elsie Ada, now Mrs. James Hanson, Lillian Viola, now Mrs. George Leidahl, and Mary Gladys. Six brothers and two sisters all of whom are living (except a brother who passed away at Brownsvalley, Minn. [sic], some years back) grieve with the family at his passing. He also leaves 3 grandchildren, who will never know the love and devotion of a tender grandparent. He was faithful and loving in all his relations as husband and father, brother, and friend. He was a member of Dorchester Camp No. 4585, M.W.A., and had at various times held offices of responsibility and trust, both in the church and township. He was a faithful communicant of the Mt. Hope Presbyterian church and his home, his family and his life bear record of his Christian principles. Some years back, it became evident that disease was making its deadly inroads on a once strong constitution, and tho the best medical talent was sought, and all that loving hearts could offer or suggest was freely done to prolong the precious life, a higher power willed otherwise, and just at the dawn of day the tired spirit was released from its earthly tenement and returned to “God who gave it,” leaving the faithful wife, children, brothers, sisters and friends to ever hold his memory precious.
Funeral services were held in Mt. Hope Church on Sunday, July 13. The sermon was preached by an old pastor, Rev. J. C. B. Peck, of Frankville, Ia., who assisted Rev. J. T. Reagan. Services at the house and grave were conducted by the Woodmen. Neighbor George Reeder being master of ceremonies, while John Palmer, of Rossville, delivered the beautiful ritualistic work of the order, holding the attention of the vast assemblage, which was said to have been the largest that had ever gathered at a like occasion at Mt. Hope.
The New Albin choir sweetly rendered three beautiful hymns and the pall-bearers were six of his fellow Woodmen, the entire camp attending in a body.
