Joseph Gardner was born in Ohio May 9, 1834 and died Monday August 1, 1904, at his home on Buell Avenue.

At about the age of two years his family moved to Iowa settling on the Mississippi River near the present city of Davenport, from thence while he was still a boy the family moved to Linn county near Cedar Rapids, then to Buchanan and later to Blackhawk county.

In 1856 they came to Allamakee, where he first met the one who on Christmas day in 1857 in the state of Missouri became his wife. In the autumn of 1860 they returned to Allamakee county bringing with them their first born, John, who died June 24, 1890 at the age of 31 years, a daughter Ida died in infancy.

He is survived by a wife, two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Flack of Ion, Mrs. Eva Klotzbach of Oelwein, a sister, Mrs. G.B. Hulse of Ion, a brother residing in Oregon, William and Eli of Pleasant Ridge, besides many relatives and friends who loved and respected him.

Mr. Gardner was a devoted husband and father, in the month of March 1862 he was converted, joining the baptist church at Ion. His favorite chapter in the holy scripture was the 14th of John, and shortly before his death he quoted from this chapter portions which gave him great comfort, especially in the promise of the second verse "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you." He had implicit faith in God, believing that all things worked together for good to them who love God.

Some time before his death he requested that these words be inscribed on his monument "The 14th chapter of John is my choice, read it." then adding that possibly some time, some where some one might be pursuaded to read this chapter and profit thereby.

The remains of this good man were interred in the cemetery at Ion, Tuesday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. G.A. Francis of the Congregational church.

Notes: His wife was Wilhelmina. Although his son John is buried in the Ion cemetery (Allamakee co.), Joseph is buried in Council Hill cemetery, Clayton county.
