Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the Schutte Funeral home and at 2:00 o'clock at St. Paul's Lutheran Church for Mrs. John F. Palas, Sr., who passed away at her home December 19. The rites were conducted by Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig.
Mrs. Helene Lenth Palas, daughter of Carl Lenth and Dorothea Schamfeld Lenth, was born December 2, 1864 in Farmersburg township, Clayton county, and departed this life on December 19, 1950, at her home in Postville, aged 86 years. Mrs. Palas was received into active membership in the Lutheran Church on April 9, 1879.
She was united in marriage with John F. Palas, of St. Olaf, on February 19, 1885. To this union four children were born, three of whom survive the passing of their mother.
Mrs. Palas was an almost lifelong resident of this community. She was an active member of St. Paul's, and for many years was active in the ladies aid, now the Women of the Church, and the Sisterhood of the congregation. For many years she served as president of the Aid. Mrs. Palas was also a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.
Left to mourn her passing are three children: Mrs. Nora McNeil, John Palas and Vera Palas, all of Postville; three sisters: Mrs. Bertha Reynolds of Mason City, Mrs. Louise Schultz of Castalia and Mrs. Amanda Fuhrman of St. Olaf; one brother, Carl Lenth of Elkader; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Palas was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Olga, Mrs. Henry Sebastian, her parents; two brothers: Albert and Rudolph; and one sister, Mary.
