Death.
Judge Topliff, Treasurer and Recorder of Allamakee Co., died suddenly at Waukon, Monday the 26th of Nov. He is spoken of as a man of undoubted integrity, amiable, generous and confiding in his disposition, and commanding universal respect.

And still there appears to be connected with the death of Judge T., a rumor that several thousand dollars of the county funds have disappeared.

The Lansing Mirror accounts for this disappearance as follows:—
JUDGE TOPLIFF had adopted the practice of carrying home every night the county funds. They were supposed to be in his house during his illness and at the time of his decease; but a search-warrant has failed to discover any money. Different members of the family are suspected of the embezzlement; but we will mention no names, while nothing more definite is known. Judge Topliff has left an estate amply sufficient to re-imburse the county.

Note: Judge Topliff was Elias J. Topliff
