Charles Schutte Last Rites Held
Funeral services for Charles Frederick William Schutte, 86, of Postville were held Tuesday, March 8, 1966 at St. John Lutheran church in Luana with Rev. Luther A. Meyer officiating.
Burial was in the Postville cemetery.
Mr. Schutte died at the Postville hospital, Friday, March 4, 1966. He underwent surgery about a month ago and appeared to be improving.
He was born the son of Helmuth and Minnie, (nee Konow), Schutte on a farm in Winneshiek County, near Postville, April 11, 1879. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in early infancy. He received his schooling in the Grand Meadow school of Clayton county. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Paul Lutheran church at Postville, April 10, 1892, by Rev. John Gass.
He was married to Ida Sander at St. Paul Lutheran church at Postville, on Feb. 27, 1906. He and his wife went to farming on the present Charles Schutte, Jr., farm west of Luana. Six children were born to this union. Mrs. Schutte died in the farm home, March 8, 1926.
Mr. Schutte was married to Ida Schultz in Elkader, March 8, 1928, by Rev. H. Franke. The couple lived on the same farm mentioned above. One daughter was born to this union. They retired to Postville in 1947. Mrs. Schutte died nearly one year ago. Mr. Schutte was a member of St. John Lutheran church at Luana.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Weike, Mrs. Anna Blumhagen, and Edith and two brothers, Fred and August.
Surviving are two daughters: Doris at home and Mrs. Lawrence (Ethel) Meyer of Ossian; four sons, Harry of Monona, Charles, Jr. of Luana, and Robert and Reuben of Castalia, 22 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mina Atwater and Mrs. Sue Carson of San Gabriel, Calif. and one brother, Louis of Postville.
In his later years, Mr. Schutte enjoyed walking very much. He went for a walk almost every day and usually twice a day. He was a familiar part of the Postville scene.
Music at the services was provided by the senior choir of St. John's Lutheran church, who sang two songs, and the congregation singing one.
Pallbearers were: Eldo, Elmer, and Willard Schutte, Ed Lambert, Carl Blumhagen, and Harvey Schultz.
