Rites Held For Otto Schroeder
Otto John Henry Schroeder was born in Mecklenberg, Germany on October 20, 1877, the son of Carl Schroeder, and his wife Marie Moeller Schroeder. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Mecklenberg, Germany on November 11, 1877.
He came to this country while still a young child and lived all of his life in the Postville area. He was confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on April 10, 1892.
He was educated in the rural schools south of Postville, and farmed south of Postville for many years, moving into town about 20 years ago.
He was united in marriage to Sophia Welzel on November 11, 1949.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters, Amanda and Bertha Schroeder, who passed away as children, two brothers, Henry Schroeder and Carl Schroeder of Postville.
He is survived by one sister, Anna, Mrs. Verner Muchow of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two nieces, Bernice, Mrs. Henry Heinson of Humboldt, South Dakota and Velma, Mrs. George Muller of Humboldt, South Dakota; one nephew, Roy Muchow of Hartford, South Dakota; and his wife's children by her first marriage, Grace, Mrs. Earl Gilster, of Castalia, Betty, Mrs. Herald Paulsen of Mesa, Arizona, Ruth, Mrs. Rudy Hinzman of Silver Springs, Maryland; Paul Welzel of Postville, Harlan Welzel of Eldorado, and Roy Welzel of West Union.
He passed away at the Postville Hospital on July 31 at the age of 80, after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services were held at the Schutte Funeral Home at 1:30 and at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2:00 on August 3. Burial was at the Postville Cemetery with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, officiating.
