Verna Frances Schroeder
Verna Frances Schroeder was born to parents Herman C. and Vida (White) Sieg in Waterville, Iowa on Dec 2, 1915. She died Sept. 14, 1993 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. She was 77.
She baptized and confirmed in the United Brethren Church in Forest Mills. She was educated in the rural schools, Postville High School, Luther College, Decorah; Upper Iowa University, Fayette, and UNI at Cedar Falls. She married Emmett W. Schroeder on July 25, 1993 (sic) at the Waukon Presbyterian parsonage. To this union two daughters were born, Bonnie Jane (Mrs. Cloy) Meyer of Castalia and Mary (Mrs. Milton) Meyer of Lansing.
Verna was a well-known, beloved special ed and kindergarten teacher for 40 years. She taught at rural Frankville, Turkey Valley, and South Winneshiek. She was a 50-year member of the Postville Rebekah Lodge, the I.S.E.A. and N.E.A. She was also a volunteer at the Winn. County Memorial Hospital. Known as "the Valentine Lady," Verna enjoyed showing and talking to groups about her extensive antique valentine collection.
She is survived by her two daughters, four grandchildren, Mrs. Michael (Rebecca) Kramer, Mrs. Gary (Corinne) Lenth, Christopher Meyer and wife Catherine, and Timothy Meyer, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Forest (Vivian) Brainard of Postville and Norma Jean (Mrs. Clarence) Brainard of Luana.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Emmett in 1980, a granddaughter, Gerri Lynn Meyer, a brother, Bernard Sieg, and a half-brother, Gordon Krumm.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, Sept. 25, 1993 at the United Methodist Church in Castalia, with burial at the Castalia Pleasant View Cemetery.
