Jerry Ryan, Allamakee county's oldest resident, passed away last Tuesday morning at the home of his son, Jerry Ryan, Jr., with whom he had made his home. He had been in feeble health for some time on account of his advanced age, but had been ill only about a week. He was past 102 years of age.

Mr. Ryan was born in County Cork, Ireland, March 15, 1829, and came to America, landing at Boston, Mass., and went from there to Columbus, Ohio. He remained there for two years, where he was employed on railroad construction and in 1852 with his brother-in-law, Will Rea, came to where Dubuque now stands. This was the end of transportation facilities and the men purchased a cow, axes and wedges and provisions and walked to Allamakee county, settling on a farm at West Ridge, where he lived until 1929, when he moved to this city (Waukon) with his son and wife.

Mr. Ryan was married to Miss Catherine Cadigan at Decorah on April 19, 1861. Two children were born to this union, both of whom survive, namely, Mrs. James Magner of Waterloo, and Jeremiah, Jr. His wife passed away many years ago.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Patrick's church and burial was made at West Ridge.
