Long time Anchorage, Alaska, resident Margaret Carlson, 66, died on Feb. 10, 2017, at her home from a suspected heart attack.
Margaret was born on March 18, 1950, in Postville, Iowa, and moved to Anchorage in the summer of 1977. During the summer of 1978, Margaret worked in a cannery in Kodiak, Alaska. After returning from Kodiak, she was a long time employee of State Farm. She left the insurance business to pursue a career with the State of Alaska. She worked for the troopers, and then became an unemployment specialist. She retired from the State on Sept. 30, 2016.
A few years after moving to Anchorage, Margaret met her husband, Mark Carlson, and they were married on Sept. 23, 1984. They had a child, Katrina Carlson, on Nov. 24, 1985.
Quilting was one of Margaret's main passions. She made dozens of quilts and Christmas stockings for Lutheran World Relief, as well as senior quilts for each graduating senior of her church, with her quilting group the Gloria Dei Piecemakers. Margaret was also planning on teaching Laila how to quilt, and had given her a sewing machine for Christmas.
Her family wrote: "Margaret was a very loving, compassionate and forgiving person. She was always there for everyone, no matter when or where. Margaret absolutely adored being a grandma. It brought her so much joy making banana bread with Laila and holding her new grandson, Theodore."
She is survived by her husband, Mark Carlson; her daughter, Katrina Carlson; Christopher Moller; her grandchildren, Laila Nail and Theodore Moller; her sisters, Connie Olson and Donna Flannigan; and her brothers, Jerry Olson, James Olson, Larry Olson and Milton Olson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Donna Mae Olson.
A service will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8427 Jewel Lake Road in Anchorage, on March 11, 2017, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be given to Alaska USA account 4565158. They are planning on purchasing a long arm sewing machine for the Gloria Dei Piecemakers in memory of Margaret. Arrangements have been entrusted to Legacy Funeral Homes Bragaw Chapel.
