Contributor: Connie Ellis (not related)Don G. Lau, age 88, of Traer, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. Don was born September 18, 1928 in Delhi, Iowa, son of Gordon and Opal (Phelps) Lau. He married Arlene French of Elkader, Iowa. He graduated from the Waterville Consolidated High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army and graduated from Upper Iowa University with a degree in teaching. Don taught and coached for three years in Delhi, followed by another three years in Shellsburg, Iowa. The family moved in 1959 to Traer where Don was employed as a teacher for 30 years, as well as a coach and then became athletic director. Don also served on the city council, was mayor and served on various committees. Don and his wife managed the Traer swimming pool for 10 years. He was also active at the St.Luke Lutheran Church.
Don will be remembered for being a die-hard Cubs fan, his daily walks downtown, his love of both people and animals, his love for his family and his smile.
Don Lau is survived by his wife, Arlene; two children, Cheryl West of Story City, Iowa and Don A. Lau of Wilburton, Oklahoma; his grandchildren Eric (Amanda) West, Jonathon (Beth) West, Leslie Lau, and Kristi (Matt) McGinn; his great-grandchildren, Shea West and Madison and Landon McGinn; two brothers, David (Pat) Lau of Fort Madison, Iowa and James Lau of Dubuque, Iowa, and a sister-in-law, Davene Lau of Baggs, Wyoming.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Gerald Lau and Curtis Lau; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lau. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at St.Luke Lutheran Church in Traer with burial at a later date in the Buckingham Cemetery.

Don grew up in the Waterville area and maintained strong ties with the community around Waterville. His parents farmed near Waterville and lived there until their deaths.
