Vernon E. Darling, 79, New Albin, died Monday, March 24, 1986, in Thornton manor Nursing Home, Lansing.

He was born March 16, 1907, in Houston County, MN, to Lysander and Clara (Myers) Darling.

He married Gertrude Ghelfi on Oct. 22, 1928, in New Albin.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Brent of Lansing; two daughters, Lorna Smerud of La Crosse, WI, and Joan Metzdorff of Mackinaw, IL; three brothers, Tom and Elton, both of New Albin, and Robert of Strawberry Point; four sisters, Elsie Williams and Margaretta Melcher, both of Waukon, Belva Darling of New Albin, and Virginia Verdon of De Soto, WI; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, New Albin. The Rev. Robert P. Rahe will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the New Albin Funeral Chapel, with a wake scripture service at 8 p.m.

The Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home, Lansing, is sin charge of arrangements.
