The Late Mrs. Mary Devitt.
Mrs. Mary' Devitt, another of Allamakee county's oldest and most respected pioneers, passed to her reward on Monday, Feb. 18, 1924, at her home in French Creek township, after a ten days illness from pneumonia. Her age was 81 years. Deceased was born in Ireland in 1842, and she came to this country August 31, 1864. Her marriage to Martin Devitt took place April 25, 1867. Allamakee county had been her home for the-past half century.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters, Francis and Bryan, who reside on the home farm; Mrs. Jos. A'Hearn of Hanover; Mrs. John Rafferty of Chicago; Patrick and Martin of Ladner, S. D. Mr: Devitt preceded her in death on May 3, 1885; also a son James, who died May 22, 1892, and a daughter, Mrs. D. D. Ronan, on Nov. 15, 1894. Since the death of her husband this good mother, though burdened, with the management of a large farm, was successful in rearing a large and respected family.
The funeral which was largely attended, was held at Lycurgus church Wednesday morning, where a soleum requiem mass was sung by her pastor, Fr. Reynolds, assisted by Fr. O'SuIlivan of Waukon, and Fr. McNamara of Lycurgus. Rev. Reynolds gave, a very fitting eulogy, after which the remains were laid to rest in the family lot in St. Mary's cemetery.
