Edgar M. Brainard, 81, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, June 3, 2016, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 7th, at 11:00 AM at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery both in rural Postville, IA. Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Edgar Maurice Brainard was born April 20, 1935, the son of George and Eva (Smith) Brainard in Postville, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at Postville Presbyterian Church in Postville and attended Evergreen Country School and graduated from Postville High School in 1953. Edgar served with the National Guard in Oelwein, IA, Company D 133 infantry for six years. On January 27, 1957, he married Shirley Ann Stock at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville. They lived near Postville and in 1958, they moved to Shirley's parents' farm in Ludlow Township which is a Century Farm.
Edgar was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church where served on several boards. He was also a member of the Allamakee County Historical Society, Barber Shoppers, a 4H leader, and received the award for Master Corn Grower in 1973 and 1977. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to toy shows, collecting toy tractors and antiques.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Brainard of Waukon; his children: Lisa (Christian) Cook, Mark (Terry) Brainard, and Matthew (Sandra) Brainard;; a sister Bernice Poesch; four sisters-in-law: Orril Brainard, Shirley Brainard, Darlene Brainard, and Charlene Brainard; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Dale, Lee, Keith, John, Gene, and Ray Brainard; and two sisters: Janice Walby Glaim, and Barbara Schori.
Honorary casketbearers are Edgar's grandchildren, and Zachary LaBomascus and Adam Russell. Casketbearers are John Opfer, Roger Stock, Don Nagel, Bruce Palmer, and Dennis and Wayne Kloke.
