Melvin A. "Mel" Meyer, 72, of La Crescent passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at home surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in New Albin, Iowa, to Alfred and Cleo (Donovan) Meyer. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and children, Mark (Diana), Valerie (Mitch), Carol and Susan (Robert). His parents preceded him in death.

Mel graduated from New Albin High School and attend ed Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He served in the Korean War and was a member of the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post No. 595. The U.S. Postal Service employed Mel for 37 years, most recently as postmaster in La Crescent. Mel enjoyed the outdoors and led his family on many crosscountry camping trips. In recent years, he rode over 100,000 miles on his Gold Wing motorcycle, including a five-week trip to Alaska. As a father, Mel was very dedicated and proud of his family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Crucifixion in La Cres cent. Monsignor Donald W. Grubisch will officiate. Pri vate family burial will be in Crucifixion Cemetery. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and again at the church Tuesday from 10:30 until the time of services. Memorials will be distributed in Mel's memory.
